  2. Kancheepuram is a land of temples, with its numerous Shiva, Vishnu, Shakti temples and holy environment Kancheepuram is rightly said to be the “temple city” of India. Adikesava Perumal Temple or also called as the Ashtabujakaram temple is one of the many Vishnu temples in Kancheepuram.

It is said that once 12 great Tamil poets and saints, known as Alvars, in Kanchipuram were living in between 4200 BCE - 2700 BCE. These saints were fully immersed in the praise of Lord Vishnu and in their poems they mentioned 108 Divya Deshams or holy places where Lord Vishnu resided. These holy places were essentially temples, 105 of them located in India, one in Nepal and other two are out of bound of mother Earth. Adikesava Perumal Temple is one of the 108 Divya Deshams dedicated for worship of Lord Vishnu. Adikesava Perumal Temple is also known as Ashtabhujakaram due to the eight hands of deity of Lord Vishnu residing in the temple. Adikesava Perumal Temple is 500 to 1000 years old and the place where the temple was erected was earlier known as Bhoodhapuri.
